It is based upon an initial Burned Area Reflectance Classification (BARC) dataset created by analyzing satellite imagery. A pre-fire and post-fire Sentinel 2 scene were processed to develop a differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (dNBR) image. A second set of pre-fire and post-fire Landsat 8 scenes were processed to develop a second dNBR. The dNBR image attempts to portray the variation of burn severity within a fire and captures the combined effects of the fire to vegetation and soil components of the ecosytem. The preliminary BARC dataset was assessed by a Forest Service BAER team and modified, if necessary, based on field conditions. Purpose: These data were created by the USDA Forest Service Geospatial Technology and Applications Center (GTAC) to support Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) teams. Lineage Process Step Process Description: These data products are derived from Sentinel 2 data. Pre-fire and post-fire scenes are analyzed to create a differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (dNBR) image. The dNBR image portrays the variation of burn severity within the fire. The pre- and post-fire images are terrain corrected and further processed to convert top of atmosphere reflectance. The Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) is computed for the pre- and post-fire images using the following formula: (NIR Band - SWIR Band) / (NIR Band + SWIR Band) = NBR The Differenced NBR is computed to determine severity by subtracting the post-fire NBR from the pre-fire NBR: (PreNBR - PostNBR) = dNBR Sequence of steps used to create Soil Burn Severity data: - Satellite images of the fire areas are requested and compared to past unburned images. Differences are identified by computer analysis and the BARC is produced identifying areas of divergence with 4 classifications. This post-fire satellite imagery data was captured twice during the progression of the wildfire. - BARC image is field verified for High, Moderate, Low, Unburned soil burn severity. Representative areas in accessible areas of the fire perimeter for each BARC rating are visited. - Field work consists of visiting representative areas of each BARC rating within accessible areas of the fire perimeter and assess the rating using “Field Guide for Mapping Post-Fire Soil Burn Severity” (Parsons et al, 2010). Subsurface and surface characteristics are collected and used to predict assessments of inaccessible areas. - A flight was used to view high elevation and inaccessible areas of Irving Peak/White River fire perimeter and Minnow Ridge fire. Surface features were used to estimate ratings and possible adjustments in areas viewed aerially. - BARC ratings are adjusted in GIS based on field notes to produce the Soil Burn Severity (SBS) map. - The BARC from the second post-fire image was created using Google Earth Engine, using the landsat 8 scenes from 2022-07-12, 2022-07-21, and 2022-07-28 to create a single pre-fire cloud-free mosaic and from a single 10-16-2022 post-fire image. - Using a the color map from the original SBS, the second post-fire was analyzed to determine the "original BARC256 threshhold". - The original SBS was then appended to the updated data using a mosaic tool, and reclassified to create the new SBS layer. This does not always indicate the area did not burn (i.e. canopy may be occluding the burn signal). Low: Areas of surface fire with little detected change in cover and little detected mortality of the dominant vegetation. Little to no change in the soil color, structure and condition occured. Moderate: This severity class is between low and high and means there is a mixture of detected effects on the dominant vegetation. High: Areas where the canopy has high to complete consumption. Changes to soil structure, color and condition are significant and hydrophobicity may have occured.
