An initial Burned Area Reflectance Classification (BARC) dataset was created by analyzing a differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (dNBR) image, which was derived from a pair (pre- and post-fire) of Landsat 9 scenes. The dNBR attempts to portray the variation in burn severity within a burned area, capturing the combined effects of the fire on the vegetation and soil components of the ecosytem. The preliminary BARC dataset was then assessed by the BAER team and modified, if necessary, based on field conditions. Purpose: These data were created by the USDA Forest Service Geospatial Technology and Applications Center (GTAC) to support Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) teams. Lineage Process Step Process Description: These data products are derived from Landsat 9 data. Pre- and post-fire scenes are analyzed to create a differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (dNBR) image, which portrays the variation of burn severity within the burned area. The pre- and post-fire images are terrain corrected and converted to top of atmosphere reflectance. The Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) is computed for each scene using the following formula: NBR = (NIR Band - SWIR Band) / (NIR Band + SWIR Band) The dNBR is computed by subtracting the post-fire NBR from the pre-fire NBR: dNBR = (PreNBR - PostNBR) Original (BARC) severity class thresholds: Unburned/Low threshold = 73 Low/Moderate threshold = 125 Moderate/High threshold = 220 Revised (SBS) severity class thresholds: Unburned/Low threshold = 68 Low/Moderate threshold = 104 Moderate/High threshold = 235 General descriptions of the severity classes: Unburned / Very low: Post-fire conditions were indistinguishable from pre-fire conditions. This does not always indicate the area did not burn; for example, the signal from a sub-canopy fire may be masked by the intact canopy. Low: Areas of surface fire with little detected change in cover and little detected mortality of the dominant vegetation. Little to no change in the soil color, structure and condition. Moderate: This severity class is between low and high and means there is a mixture of detected effects on the dominant vegetation. High: Areas where the canopy has high to complete consumption. Changes to soil structure, color and condition are significant and hydrophobicity may be present.
