Vectorized version of the raster dataset descibed below (Conversion > Raster to Polygon > No Simplify > Dissolve on Severity).
This dataset represents an estimation of burn severity for the Silver Fire on the Gila National Forest as of 7/7/2013. It was derived from 3 BARC (Burned Area Reflectance Classification) remotely sensed data source products, as well as, modifications to the BARC data based on field observation. Three BARC datasets were mosaicked together in the following order of preference:
1) Landsat 7 acquired post-fire image of 06/21/2013
2) Landsat 7 acquired post-fire image of 07/07/2013
3) SPOT acquired post-fire image of 07/04/2013
Large portions of the Landsat 7 07/07 imagery were obscured by cloud cover so the 07/04 SPOT data (also obscured by significant cloud cover) and polygons digitized based on field observation were used to supplement the 07/07 imagery. After the mosaicking operation was performed to provide the best estimate of burn severity for the entire perimeter, the Spatial Analyst > Generalization > Majority Filter (Neighbors=4, Threshold=Majority) was applied to remove isolated cell values.

Detail on the classification & processing of the BARC products:
1)"NM3288810780920130607_20130528_20130621_dnbr_barc256_utm.tif"
Clipped to the 06/22 IR perimeter and manaully edited to remove areas on the edge of the perimeter not yet burned on 06/21 and an area in the northeast perimer (as of 06/22) that was obscured by smoke. Spatial Analyst > Generalization > Nibble was used to fill Landsat 7 data gaps.
Reclassed as follows:
Unburned/Very Low = 0-75
Low = 76-84
Moderate = 85-149
High = 150-255

2)"NM3288810780920130607_20130528_20130707_dnbr_barc256_utm.tif"
Clipped to the 07/06 2045 hrs IR perimter and used Nibble tool to remove Landsat 7 data gaps. Removed areas obscured by cloud cover using cloud mask data provided by RSAC.
Reclassed as follows using same classes as the RSAC BARC4:
Unburned/Very Low = 0-63
Low = 63-118
Moderate = 118-203
High = 203-255

3)"NM3288810780920130607_20130528_20130704_dndvi_barc256_utm.tif"
Clipped to 07/04 0800 hrs perimeter and reclassed as follows:
Unburned/Very Low = 1-62
Low = 62-98
Moderate = 98-120
High = 120-188

Detail on digitized field observation based edits:
Modifications to the 06/21 BARC-derived burn severity used in Phase 1 and collected by 06/22:
High Severity - 262 acres (2 polygons)
Moderate Severity - 133 acres (1 polygon)

Modifications to the 07/04 & 07/07 BARC-derived burn severity used in Phase 2 and collected by 07/07:
High Severity - 2,601 acres (17 polygons)
Moderate Severity - 983 acres (8 polygons)
Low Severity - 73 acres (3 polygons)
The majority of these field based modifications were made in areas where the Landsat 7 07/07 image was obscured by cloud cover.
 <purpose>These data were created to represent an estimation of soil burn severity for Silver Fire Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Team efforts.</purpose>

Detail on remotely sensed source BARC products:
These data products are derived from Landsat Thematic Mapper data. The pre-fire and post-fire subsets included were used to create a differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (dNBR) image. The dNBR image attempts to portray the variation of burn severity within a fire. The severity ratings are influenced by the effects to the canopy. The severity rating is based upon a composite of the severity to the understory (grass, shrub layers), midstory trees and overstory trees. Because there is often a strong correlation between canopy consumption and soil effects, this algorithm works in many cases for BAER teams whose objective is a soil burn severity assessment. It is not, however, appropriate in all ecosystems or fires.
